“But from the beginning of creating, God made them male and female.  For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall  become one.  So they are no longer two but one.  What therefore God has joined together, let not man put asunder.”

Mark 10: 6-9

For Jesus, marriage was sacred.  Marriage between husband and wife was to be like God’s covenant of love for his people; constant, faithful and forever.

Saint Paul also thought, as did Christ, that his union was a holy one in which God was ever present.  Among his important teachings were that a husband and wife make a life--long commitment when they marry (1 Cor. 7:10-11) and that they should love each other as Jesus loved us (Eph. 5).
